Criteria
Applies elements and principles of design
ExcellenceDemonstrates a sophisticated understanding of relevant elements and principles (e.g. line, composition, contrast) and applies them purposefully to create a unified artwork.
MeritShows a clear understanding of elements and principles; most are applied effectively though some may be underdeveloped.
AchievedShows basic understanding; some elements and principles are visible but application is inconsistent.
Not AchievedLittle evidence of intentional application of elements or principles of design.
Demonstrates technical skill
ExcellenceShows confident control of the medium; technical choices (e.g. brushwork, mark-making, digital tools) enhance the intended effect.
MeritDemonstrates solid technique for the medium; minor technical weaknesses do not significantly affect the outcome.
AchievedShows developing skill; technique is adequate but inconsistent or conservative.
Not AchievedTechnical skill significantly limits the outcome; control of the medium is not yet established.
Develops ideas through an iterative process
ExcellenceWorkbook/process work shows sustained exploration: multiple approaches trialled, feedback responded to, and ideas refined over time.
MeritProcess work shows development with some trialling of ideas and response to feedback.
AchievedSome process work is present but exploration is limited; ideas are not significantly refined.
Not AchievedLittle or no evidence of process; work appears to have been produced without developmental stages.
Reflects critically on own work
ExcellenceWritten or verbal reflection identifies specific strengths and areas for development with reference to artistic intention and next steps.
MeritReflection identifies what works and what could improve, with some connection to artistic goals.
AchievedOffers a general reflection (e.g. 'I could add more colour') without linking to the brief or intent.
Not AchievedReflection is absent or limited to 'I liked it / didn't like it' without elaboration.
